Field Demonstrations of Adaptation Options

This three-year project in the Cordillera region, focused on Benguet and Ifugao provinces, was designed to enhance capacities of local stakeholders through demonstration projects on good practices to improve local coping mechanisms to climate change impacts. These also included exploration of alternative livelihoods which are climate-proof.

Capacity of local stakeholders is developed through "learning by doing" approach, and actual field conduct through their active involvement and participation in the implementation of pilot demonstration tests in selected sites. Identified adaptation measures were first field-tested for technical soundness as well as economic efficiency and effectiveness. Thus, pilot tests of adaptation options were based on rigorous technical evaluation based on robust research design and economic analysis. Though some existing indigenous coping measures are already being practiced in the area, these are used to address only current climate variability and extreme events such as typhoons, El Niño and La Niña events. Often, they are undocumented and mostly anecdotal.
