Event: Innovation Policies for SDGs in the Arab Region

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), in collaboration with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and UN University (UNU)-Merit, will convene a capacity-building workshop on innovation policies for the SDGs in the Arab region from 15-19 April 2018. The workshop will focus on, inter alia: the systemic nature of innovation and innovation policy; science, technology and innovation in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; various components of an innovation policy; and conventional and new innovation indicators.

Event: Climate, Land, Energy and Water Strategies to Support Implementation of NDCs

This event will focus on climate, land, energy and water strategies (CLEWs) to support the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to climate action in Africa. The overall objective of the meeting is to review and validate the pilot proof of concept CLEWs models by the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to evaluate the suitability of opensource tools to support the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to climate action under the Paris Agreement on climate change. African energy experts, practitioners and researchers involved in energy modelling planning and investment will carry out the review through a nexus approach that also captures the socio-economic benefits of NDCs and seek to demonstrate the application of one of such tools in selected pilot countries in Africa.

Event: Contributing to the Talanoa Dialogue: The African Climate Talks II

The African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), in collaboration with Addis Ababa University, will convene the second round of the African Climate Talks (ACT!) to facilitate Africa’s contribution to the Talanoa Dialogue. The meeting will convene at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in follow-up to the inaugural ACT! event which took place in September 2015 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. ACT! is an initiative of ClimDev-Africa, a partnership programme between the African Union Commission (AUC), African Development Bank (AfDB) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Event: Fifth Meeting of the Caribbean Development Roundtable Promoting Climate Resilience and Sustainable Economic Growth in the Caribbean

The Caribbean Development Roundtable (CDR) will convene under the general theme ‘Promoting climate resilience and sustainable economic growth in the Caribbean,’ and include panel presentations and dialogue among policy makers, academics, the private sector and other stakeholders. The CDR will consider the UN Economic Commission  for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) debt for climate adaptation swap initiative, related opportunities for investment in green industries to promote economic diversification, and efforts to promote fiscal responsibility through the use of Public Expenditure Reviews in the Caribbean. The main objective of the meeting is to provide a space for intellectual exchange of views and suggestions, with a view to identifying workable solutions to address the vulnerabilities of Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS). Participants will aim to identify integrated strategies for building resilience to be mainstreamed into national development planning processes through policy formulation.

Event: Thirteenth Meeting of the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee (AC13)

The 13th meeting of the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee (AC13) will consider, inter alia: work of the Adaptation Committee’s working group on the Technical Examination Process on Adaptation (TEP-A); technical support and guidance to the Parties on adaptation action, including through a technical paper on long‐term adaptation planning; and technical support and guidance to the Parties on means of implementation.

Event: Progressing National SDG Implementation: An Independent Assessment of the VNRs Submitted to HLPF 2017

This online launch will share the main findings of a study commissioned by civil society, analyzing the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and a sample of civil society reports produced in 2017 for the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The assessment identifies best practices and provides recommendations for improving implementation and the VNR process and reports, as well as strengthening accountability around the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The launch will also include a roundtable discussion with panelists from different sectors sharing their perspectives on the independent assessment as well as on the VNR process.

Event: The World in 2050: 2018 Writing Meeting

This meeting will gather approximately 70 scientists to work on finalizing the first report of the "The World in 2050" initiative. The report will be presented to the July 2018 meeting of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The World in 2050 is an initiative of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). This invitation-only meeting will take place at IIASA headquarters. The report will highlight the sub-set of SDGs that are to be reviewed at HLPF 2018 (SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 11, SDG 12 and SDG 15). Event: World Circular Economy Forum 2018

The World Circular Economy Forum 2018 (WCEF2018) is hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and Sitra. The 2nd World Circular Economy Forum will consider the economic benefits and social equity of the circular economy, energy and climate solutions for a circular economy, global value chains and circular trade, as well as shared mobility and circular solutions for reducing marine plastic waste. In addition, WCEF2018 will discuss the experience of Japan in becoming a leading circular economy nation, and Japan’s best practices for bringing the private and public sectors together. The World Circular Economy Forum is the global initiative of Finland and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. The WCEF brings together more than 1,000 business leaders, policymakers and experts to discuss how businesses can seize new opportunities and gain a competitive advantage through circular economy solutions, as well as how the circular economy contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
